Port of Norfolk

The Port of Norfolk, part of the larger Port of Virginia, is a major terminal owned by the Virginia Port Authority. The coastal zone is the largest terminal of Virginia’s four facilities (Portsmouth, Newport and Virginia), and its infrastructure enhancements make it a crucial hub for manufacturing and logistics in the region.

  1. Hampton Roads Area: This includes cities like Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Newport News, and Suffolk.
The region is a major centre for shipbuilding, maritime industries, and defence-related manufacturing, supported by extensive facilities like Norfolk Naval Shipyard and Newport News Shipbuilding.
  1. Richmond and Central Virginia: The Richmond area, about 90 miles from Norfolk, has a robust manufacturing sector, including plastic containers, pharmaceuticals, and food processing.
  1. Western Tidewater Region: Areas such as Franklin and Isle of Wight County host paper and wood product manufacturing plants, including major players like International Paper.
  1. Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area: Although more renowned for its services and tech industries, Northern Virginia benefits from the port’s capabilities for the import and export of high-value goods and equipment.
