Importing from Fuzhou to the UK

Fuzhou Port, located in Fujian province, serves several major industrial and manufacturing districts in the region, including the Fuzhou Industrial Zone.

The area is home to various industries, such as electronics, machinery, and textile manufacturing. Fuzhou Port also serves Putian.

A district for its robust manufacturing base, particularly in footwear and electronics, Putian benefits from Fuzhou Port's connectivity. After its merger with Fuzhou Port in 2009, Ningde has seen enhanced support for its local industries, particularly in the automotive and energy sectors.

Fuzhou Port is well-equipped to handle a variety of cargo types, including break bulk, container, liquid, and dry bulk.

What are FOB and EXW terms?

Businesses interested in importing goods from Fuzhou to the UK should be familiar with two key international trade standards, commonly referred to as 'incoterms': FOB and EXW.

  1. FOB
Under FOB (Free on Board) terms, the seller is responsible for delivering the goods to the nearest port, as well as bearing all costs and risks until the goods are loaded onto the ship. Once the goods are safely on board, ownership is transferred to the buyer, who then assumes responsibility for import fees, customs clearance, and transportation to the final destination.
  1. EXW
On the other hand, EXW, or 'Ex Work', requires the seller to only make the items available at their location (e.g. factory or warehouse). In this scenario, the buyer assumes responsibility for import and export processes, loading, insurance, and customs clearance, with minimal obligations on the seller's part.

Sea Freight service options from Fuzhou to the UK

When shipping goods from Fuzhou Port to the UK, importers have two main options for transport based on cargo volume:

  • Full Container Load (FCL), in which the shipper's goods fill an entire container they own
  • Less than Container Load (LCL), where shippers with smaller volumes share a container with others.

Do you need an export licence?

The Ministry of Commerce (MoC) categorises goods into three groups: approved, restricted, and forbidden. The MoC issues export permits with information about exporters, buyers, cargo, value, and transportation modes. Exporting banned goods requires a license. Chinese Foreign Trade Companies (FTCs) exporting to UK subsidiaries also need a license, but trading with foreign suppliers (FOBs) does not need one.
